Perry was born on the 25th of July 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Her first television appearances were as Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother portrayed the character. The parents of her didn't want her to perform until she turned older and worried about the consequences of stress. Perry said she felt timid to perform during high school, but started performing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry started her acting career in New York after graduation, landing minor parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry come back to California to work as a stage actress. In 2013, she appeared in The Other Place on Broadway along with her mother. She performed with her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was featured nine times on The Family, an ABC thriller The Family, in 2016. Her father played her on the ABC Drama Scandal. She played the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off show of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. The role was given an audition to the actress, even though she has a family tie to the character.
